User Reviews about Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip for Canon Digital SLR Camera

I usually suggest to my photography students to get this battery grip for their 7D - not just because it makes the camera feel better and extends the battery life, but mainly because it allows an easier transition to shooting vertically due to the excellent placement of the shutter release. For many new photographers, shooting vertically seems to be foreign way of shooting, which is too bad.

Yes, it adds a little bulk, but not much... and you'll look like a pro! -- Helps you be a better photographer. No, really.
It adds another dimension to the camara. It is true that makes it bulky and more heavy, the extra battery, but it is worth it. The autonomy is great and the added flexability on taking pictures well worth. Not recommended to log it around on vacation under 90 to 100 degree weather, along with your lens case. -- Saturn's conner
I threw this thing on my 7D and I'm still getting used to the weight adjustment. So as of now it comes off and on as I need it. It does add some good weight to your camera. I use it for extra balance and portrait shots. This product comes just as pictured but does include a AA battery holster which fits perfectly into the grip in place of 2 rechargeable batts.. only cons.. i wish it came with the Canon battery grip too. You have to shell out another 22 bucks via Amazon for it. -- Good, but adds some good weight
I have to agree with the majority on this one when it comes to all of the positive reviews. It balances my 7d well (as did the Canon battery grip for my backup 50d camera), however I must say that I am suprised at the sensitivity of the shutter release button on this battery grip. It is way more sensitive than what I imagined it would be based off of the reviews that warned me ahead of time. I have a Canon battery grip for the 50d, and that shutter release sensitivity feels more superior than the Canon grip for the 7d. It caught me off guard many times at a wedding in which I switched it off and used the primary shutter release on the camera body to avoid missing a shot. This is the only reason that I am knocking it down to 4 stars. For a product like this to cost $180... I feel that Canon's quality control should have stepped in and evaluated this tiny (but important) issue. -- I have to agree with the majority
I bought this grip for my 7D.

For a while, this was permanantly attached to my camera as I travelled around.

I have recently removed the grip from my camera to try out a more photojounalistic approach to photography. Two words: Big difference.

Pros:

-Vertical shutter release is awesome and convinient.
-Doubled battery life.
-Makes camera look more expensive and professional-looking.
-Partially stabilizes video

Cons:

-Weight!
-Weight!!
-Weight!!!
-Vertical grip is thicker than the grip on the camera (I would of preferred both to be the same, just my own nag)
-To an extent, price.

I emphasize the weight a lot. The camera can take on a considerable weight simply by attaching a big lens, this grip (with the batteries) adds even more weight. Since removing the grip and rolling with just a lens attached, I found it to be a lot more lightweight, almost feathery in comparison.

Of course, its going right back on the camera when I'm going on a long trip or when I shoot video for a film or a client.

Also, the price is a little high and it doesnt even have a Canon logo on it (thats why I'm paying close to $300, right?). That money can get you a pretty decent fish eye lens, or the 50mm f/1.4. But if vertical shutter is important to you, I'm sure you'll buy it regardless.

The battery grip is a good addition to your camera. But I wouldnt recommend keeping it on there at all times, especially if you shoot one-handed like I do, you'll find yourself getting a work out on your right arm.
-- Battery Grip. Equals more weight.
